What Is A Void Of Course Moon?

Note: This was originally posted on my old site, astrotimeastrology.blogspot.com on January 8, 2015 and reposted here with some minor changes.

Astrology is used for many, many things. Most of us know astrology as a way to see ourselves; it shows us our personalities and how we deal with what life gives us. It's also known as a tool for predicting the future of the individual and even the collective (nations, governments, etc.). Astrology can even be used to predict general weather patterns, subsequently assisting us with everything from event planning to farming/gardening.

Astrology also can be used to tell us when the best times to stay the course are. The times when you can concentrate on routine things, tying up loose ends to make room in your life for new projects. These times are called the Void Of Course Moon (or Moon Void for short).

In astrology, the Moon is considered void of course when she has completed all major aspects with other planets while moving through a particular sign. For those of you who are new to astrology and have little to no idea what that means, I am happy to break it down for you. Here is the chart for the next VOC Moon, on Saturday, January 10, 2015.

Look at the upper right section of the chart, and in the 8th house, you will see the glyph for the Moon, which is positioned here in Virgo, at 20 degrees and 4 minutes.

Now, look around the rest of the chart. If you're not sure what the glyphs mean, don't worry - just look at the numbers. You'll see that the Sun is positioned at 20 degrees and 4 minutes of Capricorn, forming a trine with the Moon.

You will also see Mars at 28 degrees and 36 minutes of Aquarius. When the Moon forms a 150 degree angle with any other celestial body, it is called an inconjunct (also called quincunx), and is not considered a major aspect in astrology. Therefore, the Moon is VOC even though she forms an angle with Mars before entering the next sign.

VOC moons can last anywhere from seconds to as long as two and a half days. Most of time, however, they last for several hours to half a day.

Think of the 12 signs as chapters in a book. A void of course Moon is at the end of a chapter. It makes little sense to start anything new at the end of a chapter - new thoughts, ideas, and actions should be saved for the following sign, or 'chapter'.

Therefore, the best thing to do during these times is to stay the course. It is a good time for continuing and finishing projects, and for doing routine work. Ideas and thoughts which are started during Moon voids are things that you will likely feel very different about once the Moon enters the next sign, and a new chapter in the book that is our month begins. In other words, save your new projects and major decisions until the new chapter.

Void of course Moon times are posted at the beginning of each month here on the site, and are also included as a supplement in my monthly planner (available starting February 19).
